New jewellery, new stockist, art bead scene (and discounts!), and 2x 200

So, I have several things to share with you today, along with a stack of new jewellery designs. I’d got a bit behind with putting jewellery on Etsy, so I had a concerted listing session earlier this week. However, subsequently, I took a number of pieces down because I had to take some stock to a new stockist. My jewellery will now be available at Boho in Bath. They have a smaller store in Frome (where I live) and they sell some really beautiful clothes, so if you happen to be in Bath - or Frome, I’d recommend a visit. Here’s just a couple of the new pieces that will be available there:

soft pink saucers 2

(ceramic links and discs - Scorched Earth, lampwork disc - Helen Chalmers)

scottie

(ceramic scottie pendant - Bo Hulley)

In some respects, it’s been a rotten week with me. I’m not one to be sharing such things on a blog, but suffice it to say that making jewellery has been a really, very, very welcome distraction from things. Another bright point came with being featured in an interview on Art Bead Scene. It was suggested and compiled by the lovely Rebecca Anderson of Songbead, who also posted the piece on her blog (including an extra bit about great UK supply shops). If you’re not interested in reading an interview with me, you may still be interested to hear that it featured some discount codes. Use the code SONGBEADBLOG in either of my shops and you can get 20% off jewellery and 10% off beads. I did stock up the bead shop a week or so ago; quite a few pieces have gone but there are still some new pieces to be had, such as these:

quickie for blog

I made several pairs of the patinated vintage cages because I was rather keen to use some myself.

caged birds 2

(polymer birds - Happy Fish, patina cages - Something to do Beads)

These are available in the Etsy shop (with, potentially - I hasten to remind you - 20% off!). I seem to have had a bit of a birdy spree of late.

speckled 4

(ceramic birds - Blueberribeads)

totem

(polymer bird - Something to do Beads, ceramic spike and charms - Scorched Earth)

Not the greatest photo, that one. My camera has been having a few wobbly moments this week too. My other wee bit of news is that I’ve passed both 200 sales in the bead shop and 200 likes (always sounds such an odd term) on Facebook. Which really calls for some sort of giveaway. I’m still giving some thought to what sort of giveaway it should be, but it’ll be happening soon. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with the rest of the new designs. Some can be found on Etsy, and some have gone to Boho, including this House at the end of the world necklace. I ordered this strand of rough lapis a while ago. When it arrived I found the pieces were considerably larger than anticipated, but I’m quite pleased with this design. Just need to find a use for the other dozen great rocks…

house at the end 1

(ceramic house - Elukka, ceramic cog - Captured Moments)

bunny 1

(bunny bead - Jo Lucksted)

I have to show you this second image - look at the fabulous czech glass, two-hole ‘piggy’ beads. They look like armadillo armour! I’ll be having more of those, I reckon!

(ceramic spikes - Scorched Earth)

bandir bracelet

(kitty bandit connector - Amanda Davie, lampwork beads - Danielsbeads, beaded bead - Malin de Koning)

That one isn’t actually available anywhere. I started off making it and was so liking the combination of beads that I decided it would have to be mine - hence the diminutive, scrawny-wrists proportions. And these were never going to be anybody’s but mine…

oil drum earrings

(lampwork oil drums - Helen Chalmers, rusted vintage rings - Something to do Beads)

There have to be some treats. Ta-ra for now.

More new jewellery

It’s market day again this weekend, so I’ve been busy making up more stock. I hadn’t quite realised how busy, until I started taking all the photos. They’re a bit dark, I’m afraid, but there’s plenty of them. If there’s anything you fancy, just give me a shout.

(ceramic spikes - Scorched Earth) blue eyes

(ceramic charm, tube, cap and connector - Scorched Earth, lampwork bead - Tartan Trout, beaded bead - Malin de Koning, beach pottery button - Grey Bird Studio)

(lampwork focal - At The Edge (also Cheeky Cherub Designs))

(ceramic lantern and charm - Scorched Earth)

verd bird pendant necklace

(ceramic heart charm - Scorched Earth, bronze polymer bird, patina chain and hoops - Something to do Beads)

Why must necklaces be so tricky to photograph? These last earrings earrings aren’t actually going on the stall. They’re already stuck in my ears. Had to be done…

platinum drops

(ceramic drops - Scorched Earth)

New designs

Just a quick blog post, this - with pictures of new jewellery designs, and very few words! I’ll be doing my regular market in a week or so and I may not get around to listing these before then, so do let me know if there’s anything that catches you eye.poppy

Neu! - metal, metal

They’ve been a long time coming, but I finally have a huge new batch of beads to share with you all, which I’ll be listing this evening. Before now, I’ve never really bought into any of the specialist products that are available for claying. One of the good (and very handy!) things about poly clay is that you can often get away with using things that you happen to have around the house. However, this year I resolved to start branching out a bit and to try some new materials and tools. When I came across this patinating and colouring system a couple of months ago, I thought, ‘Oooo, that’s for me!’ It’s not really readily available in the UK - there’s one place that stocks some bits of it, in a pretty spasmodic way. So, part of the delay has been down to waiting for parcels from the States - and, of course, waiting for customs to do their infamous handling of them. It was all a bit pricey but, once I started, I couldn’t resist stocking up on the whole range.

It’s quite a time-consuming process, to use the stuff. I had planned to write more about it here but I’ve been sleeping really badly, and I don’t have it about me today to stick too many sentences together! So, I’ll keep it brief. You start off with a clutch of regular baked beads, and you apply a primer, then a number of coats of a metal paint, either iron or copper or brass or bronze or silver. The paint contains metal particles and a binder and so when it drys it actually forms a thin layer of metal (neat, eh? - I thought so!). The paint also includes an acrylic element which adds strength to the metal coat and stops it flaking or cracking, etc. Once you’ve built up this metal base and whilst your top coat is still a bit wet, you set off the oxidising process. And then you wait… and wait… ….but it’s worth it. You can achieve various results, depending on which patina solution you use: beautiful, glowing verdigris bloom, rich crusty rusts, and lovely thick, dark grunginess. And it doesn’t have to end there, because you can also apply dye oxides to colour the patina. This looks particularly lovely with the verdigris patinas because the bloom just makes the colours glow. Once you’re done there’s still a good bit of waiting to do. You need to leave it another 72 hours to let all the metal and patina and dye set. The dye is absorbed(?) - probably not the right word - by the metal, etc., so it’s not going anywhere, which is quite smart. Anyway, I’ll quit with the waffle and share some of the results.

And as you might guess, it’s not just polymer clay you can use this stuff on. I’ll also be listng a small number of patinated vintage chains and components, and a few other metal based bits. There aren’t many of these bits but I’m planning to get some bigger numbers made up soon.

coloured metal May 2013

And if you’re not liking the metal, don’t worry. I’ll be stocking up all the old favourites as well.

reg beads may 2013

I’ve tried to think of everything! I’ll be listing all the above and more between 6-7pm this evening. I’m afraid that I am going to have to charge a bit more for the metal-ly pieces to cover all the additional costs, etc. I hope you’ll think they’re worth it. I can’t wait to get some more made up so I can use them myself! But not today - today I’m just going to have a nice, quiet bead - all very still and gentle - and sit it out until I can crawl back into bed…

That time again

So it’s market time again and I’ve been preparing my stall. Yesterday was the day for the frustrating and time-consuming task of deciding on a layout. I’m going to pare it back and put less out. I’ve been thinking that I might be getting towards guilty of cluttering.

IMG_6956

Now I’m wondering if it’s looking too spare… (The white candelabra thing-y is for cheaper earrings.) As you’ll be able to tell, my flat gets a little cramped when I’m doing this. I wasn’t aided by the presence of Dexy, who has been sporting some new headwear this week.

dex's bucket

There are few things more pathetic than the sight of a dog wearing one of these things. He had a bite or something that he was fretting at. Thankfully, it’s cleared up now and he’s allowed to go without it. Whilst ministering to him, I’ve been making up a few new pieces for the market.

7th Bead Soup Blog Party Reveal

So, it’s my reveal day for the 7th Bead Soup Blog Party. I wrote a blog some weeks ago, detailing what the Bead Soup Blog Party is all about, so if you’re scratching your head, head here. If you do know what it’s all about, you’ll still want to see what I received from my partner, Kathrin Lembke.

soup from kathrin

There was a bright selection of Kathrin’s lampwork beads and a mix of antique brass beads and findings. There was also a collection of quite dainty, pretty beads (mother of pearl drops, freshwater pearls, and floral ceramic rounds), which seemed quite distinct from the rest of the soup, and I had the idea to develop the design of a pair of earrings I made some time ago and offset the prettiness with some darkened, artfully messy wirework frames. Which didn’t go well. After quite a lot of wrapping, hammering and LOS-ing, I had a mess that wasn’t remotely artful. But after all this I wasn’t going to be abandoning the wretched things, so I wrapped them in sari silk ribbon and started to adorn them.

BSBP earrings 1

There were going to be pearls on those chains but enough was enough. I had a vague plan for a necklace and I knew that I would have quite a lot of soup left over, including the clasp. So, the next thing I made was a bracelet, using much of the lampwork and antique brass, and mixing in some czech glass and vintage lucite.

bsbp bracelet 1

When I made up the soup for Kathrin, I limited the colour palette to two colours and avoided putting in metal pieces that would influence what colour metal she would use. I had a strong idea what I would do with it if I were using it and I was interested to see what decisions she made on these things. I tested myself in a similar way. I picked out the large orange flower focal then tried to think of colours, other than those in the soup, that would work with what I had. I decided on deep indigo and hot pink and added some vintage glass and charms, dyed magnesite and handmade paper beads (by Spoon). And lots more chain!

bsbp necklace 1

It’s quite a simple design but I like it. Now I must go and see what Kathrin made. Here’s the soup I sent to her.

Small parcels of wonder…

Oh dear, I’ve been a bit remiss here. I haven’t written a post for a couple of weeks. I haven’t been idle. I’ve been working with some new materials, on a new batch of beads. It’s quite a time-consuming process, but a very fun one and I’m quite consumed with it. But, more of this anon. With no new makes to share, I thought I’d offer a little view of some of the new beady goods that have arrived from others in the last month or so. It’s been a time of holding the purse strings quite tight, and a lot of my funds have gone on tools and bead-making materials. So, post days have been fewer, but all the more treasured for it. One of my new favourites is Happy Fallout. Although, I’m really quite sickened that I didn’t come up with the text technique on these palimpsest beads.

Here’s a few more beauties:

happy fallout

I’ve been a fan of Jo Lucksted‘s ceramics for ages. I’ve used her buttons in several pieces but she doesn’t usually offer beads for sale, so these had to be had.

il_570xN.449823199_labm

Aren’t they marvellous? I shouldn’t really look when Petra updates her shop but I find it hard not to - and harder still not to spot some needful thing. These are just some of the latest additions to my Scorched Earth collection.

scorched earth

I just love that pale lavender colour. And that’s why I had to bag this clasp, a combination of Rebecca Anderson‘s wirework and Bo Hulley‘s ceramics, from The Curious Bead Shop.il_570xN.442706415_sy8z

I have Rebecca to thank / blame for the next acquisitions. I risked the customs trap to get these marvels (and a couple of clasps) from Amanda Davey. And, yes, of course I got caught. amanda davie

I’d had my eye on that tatty lace pendant for some time. It’s going to get a simple treatment - and it’s staying with me.

I got another customs hit when I received a parcel from Tree Wing Studio, but I’ve wanted some of Rebekah’s aster beads for ages, so it was worth it. I got them in three different colours, along with some other flowers. She also, very kindly, popped in a free owl.treewingstudio

I’ll leave you with these beautiful glass oil drums from Helen Chalmers. Expect to see them in earrings very soon!

Market prep

I’m doing my first craft fair of the year this Sunday. It seems an age since the last one, which was is early December. I’m not sure how many customers there’ll be, given the weather and the state of people’s finances. Still, I’ve been busy making new stock.

I’m hoping this will be a lonely cloud on Sunday. I see I’ve made quite a lot in the last few days. I think I’m trying to postpone getting all the stall stuff out and sorting all the dull tasks that need to be done. Anyway, if you happen to be in the Southwest this weekend and fancy visiting a quality artisan market and Flea, do come along to Frome. I’ll be stationed on Catherine Hill, from 10am - 2pm.

Bead Soup Blog Party - Soups!

When I started my blog, one of the things I was particularly looking forward to was participating in blog hops. Well, this is my first blog hop and I’m starting with one of the biggies - The Bead Soup Blog Party. For those who don’t know about it, the Bead Soup Blog Party is a huge, international blog hop, now in its seventh year. There are over 500 beaders from all over the globe who have been paired up by the marvellous organiser, Lori Anderson. The partners swap ‘soups’ - bead mixes, including a focal and a clasp. Then everyone reveals what they have made on set dates - there are now three reveal dates, owing to the large number of participants. I went for the third reveal date, a choice I’m very glad I made now, as I haven’t started making any jewellery yet and I received the soup from my partner some weeks ago…

So, my partner: Kathrin Lembke, of Alles Perle is a lampworker based near Hamburg, where she sells her jewellery and her lovely beads.alles perle card

I just love lampwork beads but I can’t always afford them, so I was very chuffed to find I’d been paired with a lampworker. I was rubbing my paws in anticipation, looking forward to receiving some glassy goodies. I wasn’t disappointed.

lampwork from soup

I do like this mix of colours. I’ve had a bit of a thing for purple and orange recently, so I was very pleased to open this selection. There’s a number of potential focals in there. Along with these, there was a generous mix of antique brass beads and findings, including a dinky toggle clasp. I also received a pretty combination of pearls, floral ceramic rounds and mother-of-pearl drops.

brass and pearl 2

There are some unusual (to me, at least!) pieces in the brass mix. I particularly like the linked hoops and the large saucers. I’m not sure what I’ll make yet but I have one or two ideas in mind. Here’s the soup in full - Thanks again, Kathrin!

soup from kathrin

So what did I send? Well, I started by looking for a focal on Etsy. When it turned up I was really quite tempted to keep it myself and search out a different one. But, I resisted - just… It’s a gorgeous porcelain and glass pod, made by Lisa Stevens of Seapods. I was a bit stuck on what clasp to send but then I remembered this vintage casein button, which sits rather nicely with the focal, being quite pod-like too. So I sent that along with a black metal hook.

my focal and clasp - bsbp

I wanted to include some of my own beads, so I improvised a bit and came up with a pod set in red and white. As regular readers will know, I’ve made quite a lot of pod sets since then. I added a mix of vintage glass, freshwater pearls and a scattering of seed beads, and I had my soup.

I have been a bit bothered thinking that I should have sent more. Still, there’s nothing I can do about that now. I just have to wait until 13th April to see what Kathrin makes with it!

Since last time

It’s been over two weeks since I last blogged. Tsk tsk… I’ve had some distractions - visiting London to meet my new nephew being the one of the pleasanter ones. There have also been new beads and some new jewellery designs. I planned to say more about a number of these things than I will do here, and I will say more in time. Perhaps it’s the impact of listening to George Osborne’s voice for 54 minutes, but I’m feeling a little short on chat today!

I’ve made quite a lot of beads recently. I’ve been wanting to try some text-y beads and charms for a while now. I made a bit of an error before I started, when I ordered my stamps. As I often do when I order things online, I failed to consider how large the letters were. Once I opened them up, I realised they were quite large. I had planned to put little phrases on things but with these stamps I’d be limited to very large pendants if I did that. So, I opted for single words. The matter of what words to use is something I’m going to come back to. Briefly, for now, I picked words associated with intimacy and constance - fitting for jewellery, I thought.

I was anxious with these that they shouldn’t end up looking like Swoondimples rip-offs, especially as the font on the stamps looks very similar. I hope I’ve avoided that - please do say if you disagree! It becomes quite hard to tell once you’ve looked at something and fussed over it for some time. There were quite a number of attempts that ended up in the dud tub, but I’m fairly pleased with this handful. New, smaller letter stamps are on order.

I also got some new birds and houses made. A number have sold but these are still available. bird and house top up

I also finally got around to sending some new stock to Big Bead Little Bead. There are more houses there now, along with owls and hedgehogs.

And now for the new jewellery. Hopefully, I’ll get these listed on Etsy shortly.

(ceramic button - Scorched Earth, polymer slices - me) pale bird bracelet

(ceramic bird - Blueberribeads)

I had to use that Blueberribeads bird to justify getting some more, this time in grey.

I got a bit behind with the AJE earring challenge, so I had to make up several pairs.

spring dahlia earrings

(lampwork dahlia beads - Ciel Creations, lampwork headpins - Earthshine Beads)

And I finally got a pair made with my own beads. These pods are also available in the bead shop.

I’ll leave you with one last pair of earrings. No art beads, just lovely czech glass and some vintage, antique silver hoops. I’ll be back soon - I have Bead Soup Blog Party pics to share.
